Voice Restoration

Variety of phonatory (voice) abnormalities are due to the undesirable structural modifications of the voice box (larynx). These may be due to the presence of unwanted benign lesions that interfere with the intended function of the voice box (vocal folds). Infiltration of the normal tissue with abnormal growth alters the mechanical properties of the vocal folds resulting in incomplete closure of the vocal folds. Alternatively, it may result in unwanted air escape from the voice box or it may perturb the normal vibratory patterns necessary for natural sound production.

In other situations pre-existing abnormalities in the nerves that control voice production may have resulted from having undergone other surgical procedures such as thyroidectomy. Dr. Falsafi is uniquely trained to make accurate determination of the mechanisms that are responsible for voice alteration and to devise individualized treatment strategies for each patient. One such treatment option involves using biocompatible prostheses in order to move the displaced vocal fold to its more native position.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aid

This state-of-the art hearing restoration tool involves the implantation of a powerful hearing amplifier behind the ear in the operating room. Individuals with one-sided hearing loss particularly benefit from this technology by having their poorer functioning ear restored to levels that are comparable to their better hearing ear. Also, by virtue of being surgically implanted outside the ear, BAHA is particularly beneficial for those individuals who suffer from chronic ear infections or those who cannot tolerate the presence of a device in their ear canals.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid nodules and cysts are commonly treated conditions in our practice. Needle biopsy in combination with blood work and a variety of imaging modalities are used to correctly diagnose the condition. Benign nodules or cysts are observed for growth or cancer-like change in the make up of the lesion. In these circumstances and in those were needle biopsies are non-diagnostic, surgical removal of the involved thyroid lobe is undertaken. In those cases where clinical indicators support tumor presence partial or complete removal of the entire thyroid gland and the involved lymph nodes is performed. Close collaboration with endocrinology colleagues allows for the post op management of a low thyroid hormone state, a low calcium state, and for tumor surveillance using radio active iodine.
